FA Cup Preliminary Round
My 1st visit to Foxbury Avenue came in September 2020. It has already been not a great year for 2020 especially due to COVID-19 and with the season ending early in March, it was anyone's guess on when anyone could watch any some sort of football. My 1st game back came the week before at Ashford United as their tenants Kennington were hosting a pre-season friendly against Gills U23's and it gave me a great chance to re-visit Ashford United as my last visit there came back in 2011. So after looking at fixtures for this coming Tuesday, noticing the FA Cup was starting, I decided on Glebe. Despite the ground less than an hour's drive, I think it was fair to say it was about time I ticked the ground off! Haha. So with the limited capacity extending to 300, we didn't have any problems getting into the ground after leaving home around 6.15pm. Tonight would be a 1st time fixture between the 2 sides, with Whyteleafe playing in the Isthmian League South East Division and Glebe playing in the Southern Counties East League. The only players I recognised playing tonight were Charlie MacDonald the ex Brentford striker and Frankie Sawyer both playing for Glebe, Sawyer playing for Sevenoaks Town last season. So as kick off approached, and we stood behind the goal. Whyteleafe took the lead on 25 minutes from Ryan Gondah's free-kick, a great finish to put the visitors in front. The 2nd goal came 5 minutes later with Gondah's shot was saved by Glebe's keeper but then David Owusu leapt on to make it 2-0. Although Whyteleafe are in a higher league than Glebe, it wasn't all 1 way traffic. Glebe held their own and pulled 1 back but Ryan Gondah's penalty on 70 minutes killed off the tie and in a good 90 minute game. Whyteleafe went on to go through to the next round in which they now host Peacehaven and Telscombe FC at home. As the game just finished before 10pm due to the game starting later, I was home at around 10.30pm.
THE GROUND:
When the club joined the Kent Invicta League, the club were then playing at Holmesdale's Oakley Road until 2014 when the club obtained a 25 year lease on Foxbury Avenue. The 1st game at Foxbury Avenue was against Canterbury City in front of a crowd of 42 supporters. The ground's capacity is 1,200. Stansfeld Oxford & Bermondsey FC also play at Foxbury Avenue.
